Try going to View > make sure 'Components marked as hidden' is Checked.

That is part of the problem. When it is Checked it disappears from the canvas as well.
I have set up a Text box to SHOW only when the BUTTON Button is clicked and then hide it when the HIDE Button is clicked.
But in edit mode when I check the HIDE COMPONENT box the TEXT box (Rectangle_1) also disappears from screen.

I am trying to attach a sample of the .vp file but is unable to do so.
I am running on MacOS V10.14.5 & JIM is V 8.7.0
