If I have multiple overlapping items, now can I select between them *without* sending the top items to the bottom? Is there way to select next for example?

Just two overlapping shapes. In this example, you can easily click on one or the other, but I am specifically referring to a situation where one is completely covered by the other.. without having to modify the order of those elements by bringing successive items to the bottom until you get the one you want.. is there a way to select a specific item. Maybe a way to cycle through overlapping items?
